Cinderella Tours

Last night, arriving to the destination around 2am, over two hours later than the original plan (because the very problematic relationship between very low temperatures and VR) I thought that if I’d put up  a travel company, it should be called Cinderella Tours.

Always catching the latests return connection at last minute. Ending up in delayed, cancelled or some other way complicated flight / train / whatever.  But still winning, leaving the party on the highest point and getting the prince in the end.

Fear, to a great extent, is born of a story we tell ourselves, and so I chose to tell myself a different story from the one women are told. I decided I was safe. I was strong. I was brave. Nothing could vanquish me.

Don’t get me wrong though; I’ll never learn to understand nor like the slow and poorly functioning Finnish trains.

Helsinki was great, freezing cold but beautiful and the Henri Cartier-Bresson in Ateneum was exhausting but thought provoking. And of course there were some dancing and laughter and burgers and beer.  A nice little visit.

Goodbye Lapland > Helsinki Stopover

Only the northern people seem to understand the concept Helsinki Stopover by Finnair. Flying there in the evening, lay over, and continue flying the next day. Or in my case, to take the train, since the flights KUO-RVN-KUO (200€) were cheaper than HEL-RVN-HEL (400€) + the train ticket HEL-Kuopio ‘central’ was cheaper (25€) than the taxi (40€) from KUO to Kuopio city center, aka current home.

Sounds and is absurd, traveling in Finland I mean. But this time it’s ok, the stopover I mean, since I have the opportunity to see some of my friends after a long time and to catch one of the last changes to see the Henri Cartier-Bresson exhibition in Ateneum. A good deal I’d say. Helsinki is so tiny, that one day is most of the times enough for seeing what there’s to see right then. And I’ve heard it’s kinda extra cold these days. The seaside -20’C really is worse than inland -20’C. It creeps into your bones and stays there and that’s not nice, even in girl from the north country -standards.

It’s also kinda funny how in Helsinki they need these artificial lights by Lux Helsinki to light up the polar night.  You know, in Lapland we have this kaamos thing.. In other words, one night stopover in Helsinki is enough for me.  Somehow it hasn’t proved to be worth more, but maybe some day.

Siperia Helsinki calling. Lappi oli kylmä, kaunis ja kiva. Mutta nyt on taas aika moikata kavereita Helsingissä ja nähdä kehuttu Henri Cartier-Bresson Ateneumissa.  Olisi siellä myös  LUX Helsinki, mutta Lapin kaamoksen luonnollisten värien ja valojen jälkeen ei keinovalo helposti iske… Helsingissä on kiva käydä, mutta vain lyhyesti, ainakin kunnes toisin todistetaan.

 

Shades of Winter Engelberg

And everyone said wohooo! Four days on the most intensive and fun camp Engelberg has ever seen (not-so-objective-opinion). So there we were, the girls, Shades of Winter coaches and Thomas (lucky one ;)).

Ski Lodge Engelberg hosted us amazingly- home away from home except serving better breakfast than the place most people call “home”.  Tack! Moreover, Engelbert-Titlis offered the great setting (not much but maybe the most snow in the Alps right now (& even some powder), GoPro the cameras for some legendary material (#goproshadesofwinterengelberg), RECCO® some extra safety and Peak Performance topped it all with (free and dry) champagne.

But again, the best were the people. The beautiful & talented pros aka Shades of Winter coaches, accompanied by local guide Thomas, & the amazing, brave funny & talented women whom I’ve never met before but who I now know share the same passion for skiing and living to the fullest (the famous reference group). This kind of companion is a luxury which I unfortunately haven’t had the opportunity to enjoy too much the last two years. But now I did & it was just awesome to shred with these sisters from another mothers.

It was more than nice to learn more about the safety in the mountains, level up my freeskiing technique & especially to have that  extra pressure put on you & the support & the smiles. Like Matilda told us, it’s all about finding your own challenge but also to have companion with whom to share the pure happiness mountains deliver.

I’m definitely in to more trips (Japan…) with these girls anytime.

It was nice. Very nice. Thank you Switzerland, Engelberg, Ski Lodge Engelberg, Sandra, Matilda, Thomas, Melissa and all the girls. Loved it!

Take a flight on the wild side

Prepping for Switzerland & Engelberg going on. It’s been storming outside, while inside I’ve been training, reading, watching films and booking flights, topped with day job. I’ve also bought the first christmas presents and running shoes, thanks for web shops and  UPS especially since the Finnish Post

Interestingly, the flights part might get to be the most exciting experience during my Swiss adventure, since these days i’s not so easy to trust on Finavia’s / Finnair’s / Flybe’s (btw, shouldn’t it be Norra already?) ability to deliver the service I’ve ordered from them and paid for them. Luckily (for them) their monopoly for this exact route do not give me any chance to choose another service provider, with i.e. better track record on fulfilling their promises.

But I really hope that for once they’d surprise me positively & that my skis nor I get behind the kinda tight schedule. Instead, I hope to get myself and my skis smoothly to the destination. The snow reports from Alps has been promising, which is something I definitely do not wanna miss. And of course, one should never miss Gruyere.

Syömistä, juomista, nukkumista, treenaamista, suunnittelua, lentojen varausta, leffojen katselua, ostoksia ynnä muuta. Kun ulkona myrskyää, niin tapahtuu sitä näemmä sisälläkin. Sveitsi kutsuu reilun parin viikon päästä, ja vähitellen on matkakuume kohonnut huippulukemiin. Kuten rahanmenokin.

Stockholm – meet me in the middle

Once upon a time (weekend) in Stockholm. There were the convenient Flygbussarna, fast Arlanda Express & modern SL. Very cozy a hotel and  date night; ate well & enjoyed some excellent wine & service. Laughed a lot & talked some nonsense (or at least I talked – it seems Savo does not improve my language skills).

Then there were pizza & red wine also; burgers and öl the great views & photographs, cold (it was amazing almost humiliating to notice how the Californian was better prepared for the cold than the Lappish one..), beautiful people & fairy lights.

Stockholm’s always a good idea. Why on earth I moved away from there?*

While I was in Lapland

It’s kinda absurd feeling to be at one the most peaceful places on earth, while something so awful is happening, to something and someone you so much love and adore. If something, this weekend and especially Friday the 13th reminded me that hey, you only live once and while living you should live to the fullest. Love, laugh, dance, ski, travel. Do whatever makes you happy. Just do it, before it’s too late. Always go and always take the change. Take care.

Gotta go a long way, so let’s be brave.

Right now I’m at Rovaniemi airport, waiting for delayed flight and thinking how much better spend this time and money would be on dinner and wine with the dearest one. But next weekend baby, next weekend there will be wine and dance and love.

Olipa kerran Lappi ja viikonloppu, joka muistutti raskaasti että parasta on vain elää tämä yksi ainoa elämänsä parhaansa mukaan. Olla tuhlaamatta aikaansa tai energiaansa turhuuteen ja sen sijaan elää täysillä, rakastaa, hiihtää ja tehdä kaikkea sitä mikä tekee onnelliseksi. Lappi on hieno paikka ja siellä voi totisesti elää aika onnellisena. Harmi vain ettei juuri tämä ihminen tunnu saavan sieltä töitä millään…

Tällä hetkellä istun Rovaniemen lentokentällä. Lento on myöhässä ja opin juuri ettei Kuopion keskustasta lentokentälle, tai lentokentältä, kulje mikään muu liikennemuoto kuin aivan liian kallis taksi tai oma auto. Nämä jos mitkä ovat ns. ensimmäisen maailman ongelmia, joista tällä hetkellä tuntuu niin typerältä valittaa, mutta ne ovat myös juuri sellaista ajan ja rahan tuhlausta, mitä en haluaisi joutua kokemaan. Sen sijaan että istun nyt täällä kentällä ja maksan taksista 40€, istuisin mieluummin rakkaimpani ja 40€ viinipullon kanssa illallisella. Onneksi se kuitenkin toteutuu jo seuraavana viikonloppuna. Siihen asti, on vain oltava urhea.

October 1st

Hello October. You came with a storm, literally and figuratively. Week has been all work and play (and mammoths). And culturally rich, in many ways. I’ve been to Jätkänkämppä, Kuopio Music Centre, Ravintola KreetaKuopio Natural History Museum, Triple Parade Exhibition (those rings!) and running. A week definitely worth the saturday beer.

Big thanks to all of you, who made this week. Old and new acquaintances, friends and strangers; for the great service, entertainment and inspiring conversations. In that light and on those evenings (and with you, fellow Arctic people), Kuopio was almost the most beautiful thing I’ve seen, quite ok

Myrskyinen lokakuun alku, kirjaimellisesti ja kuvaannollisesti. On ollut töitä ja leikkiä (ja mammutteja ja hienoja sormuksia) Jätkänkämpällä, Kuopion musiikkikeskuksella, Kuopion luonnontieteellisellä museolla ja Ravintola Kreetassa, sekä juoksua myrskun kaatamia puita väistellen. Sellainen viikko, että lauantaiolut tulee todellakin tarpeeseen.

Kiitos osallisille, vanhoille ja uusille tuttavuuksille, hyvästä palvelusta ja inspiroivista hetkistä. Oli kivaa ja hetken aikaa kansainvälisine arktisine vieraineen Kuopio oli ihan kiva paikka.
